What’s Poppington: Tawana T The Best Publicist In Charleston

PrettynPoppingtonTawanaT

Last week I listed 5 ways to become a boss, well, I have another way you could explore your boss dreams and that is to be like Tawana T. A few days ago I had the pleasure of interviewing the best publicist in Charleston SC, Tawana Tolbert. As Tawana and I spoke over brunch,  we discussed her business as a publicist. She touched on how she has to exert herself as a boss in the male dominated hip hop industry, and in true boss fashion when representing others in the public eye, Tawana spoke more about her clients then herself. She is a professional, she knows her craft, and her clientele list is extremely impressive. Conducting this interview was a pleasure and I’m sure this is just the beginning of interviews to come.

Whats Poppington: Black Girl Magic

PrettynPoppington-BlackGirlMagic

Have you ever started your day out at work with tons of questions in regards to your hair. For example, OMG! How did your hair get so long, or wow it looks so natural, how did you do that and my all time favorite, your hair is so curly and short, I didn’t know you could get it that straight with so much length.

If you know anything about black girl magic then all of these comments and questions relate to you. Black hair is a blog in itself. There are tons of topics to discuss when it comes to black hair, but to be particular I want to talk about the natural movement vs creamy crack (a relaxer) .

I was natural for years, so long that I cant remember the year I went natural. About three months ago I cut my hair short and ran back to the relaxer.

Both styles are natural I have a keratin treatment in one picture and a natural wash and go in the other

I made the decision to go back to a relaxer because as a new mom I could not keep up my natural hair. I LOVED it I honestly did, but keeping it healthy takes a lot of time and dedication. Lotioning, oiling, twisting and braiding every night for an hour was not working. And, If I had to wash my hair that day, well lets just add an extra hour to my hair care mayhem. So, tie all that in with having a new baby and see what you come out with. For me it didn’t work and I opt for a cute relaxed tapered cut.

These are before and afters. Naturally curly hair and then relaxed and cut hair.

Every now and then I hit my co-workers with a little black girl magic. It’s fun and I love different looks. Just because I where a weave from time to time or relaxed hair does not mean that I don’t love my color or my natural mane. If you ask a few of the “woke” bothers and sisters that question, get ready to have a seat and listen to the how, what and whys of how black woman should not relax or weave their hair. F.Y.I just because your awake now (as am I) that doesn’t mean you can preach to anyone about how they decide to where their hair. Natural, weaved, or relaxed it’s all beautiful, just maintain healthy hair and choose for yourself your needs to suit your purpose.

The long hair is a weave and the other is braided extensions.

In every picture I look different, hair will do that for you, and I enjoyed every look. So, there you have it folks, that’s why it’s called black girl magic.

Hello there, I’m Jenifer Vanderhorst the blogger. Pretty-N-Poppington is an outlet for me to explore and discuss urban culture, entertainment, and lifestyle. Everything that is posted on PnP comes from that expressive space in my head that’s always itching to get out and talk about any and everything. I am from Charleston, SC born and raised, and I love to post and showcase independent artist of all genres, local events, and eatery’s, from the Charleston area. Charleston is a beautiful place to live and it was more beautiful growing up . We have a tremendous amount of black culture, success, and beautiful life here in Charleo, and It means a lot to me to showcase the black positivity that my city has to offer.

Hannibal’s Kitchen in Downtown Charleston SC

I started PrettynPoppington back in 2010. I started it because I lost my creativity. I wasn’t working for MAC Cosmetics any longer (after a seven year tenure.) I wasn’t practicing as a licensed esthetitian (I’ve been licensed now for thirteen years) and I was no longer traveling and working in the entertainment industry as a freelance makeup artist. So, I didn’t have that much needed outlet of expression. I yearned to get back into something that revved my quirky engine, so PrettynPoppington is here and now it’s a thing.

Every now and then you might see a beauty or fashion post from me, because those are also loves of mine. When PnP first got started we were a beauty and fashion blog and we did very well. I decided to go another route because I lost my fashion blogger and did not want to search for anyone else (he was absolutely amazing.)  Secondly my industry changed along with my life. Suddenly lifestyle and culture became more important to me, along with supporting my community. I truly hope you enjoy my website and my opinions on all things urban culture, entertainment and lifestyle with a Charleston flare. If you have any suggestions leave a comment. Thank you.

What’s Poppingtion: Panda Desiigner vs Karmin Who Did it Better?

PrettynPoppington-Karmin

Karmin? Who’s Karmin? Karmin is only the dope ass duo that became YouTube sensations after covering Chris Brown’s look at me now featuring Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes a few years back, April 12, 2011 to be exact. If that hasn’t refreshed your memory you need to come out from under the rock you’ve been sleeping under, but until then I’ll just tell you more. Amy Heidemann, the female half of Karmin, has amazing vocals and a natural flow when it comes to rap. Rather she’s rapping a cover or her own bars she kills it every time. Her fiance, Nick Noonan, is the talented keyboardist in the background doing his thing. The two got signed back in 2011 and now has out two singles, “Hello” and “Brokenhearted” they both have landed in Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart and reached number one on the dance chart. The two are at it again with their new remix cover of Panda, by Desiigner. And for the record, I like their version better, but don’t take my word for it, judge for yourself and tell me know what you think below.

I have been so inspired to do a post on The Original Charleo for a few months now and I feel like now is fitting especially with the holidays peeking around the corner. What is The Origin Charleo you may ask, well to answer your inquiry, it’s the authentic and official Charleston clothing brand that speaks volumes in the 843 as a whole and has now taking larger strides to other states with the interests of celebrities rocking Charleo gear for all to see. I LOVE the love and exposure Charleo Clothing is getting.

I love it because this one dream and/or vision of an official clothing line that was cultivated by the founder or founders has brought unity and support to a culture (urban culture) and city of people that is hard as hell to get support and love from. The Charleston hip-hop and entertainment scene is one that you would have to know about to speak on. If you know anything about the hip-hop and urban music scene in Charleston you would know that unity and support of fellow artist is as cold as an Antarctic draft.  Since The Original Charleo has launch I see and feel consistent love and support of the brand and a culture of people has finally pooled together to support their own through the love of being fresh to def and the culture of hip-hop.

Who’s Poppington: Brianna Davis

BriannaIamShe-Prettynpoppington

Brianna Davis, who is Brianna Davis? Well, she is another dope ass indie artist that has a VOICE, meaning, she has bars for days, clarity in her rhymes, and lyrics to go along with beauty and a unique swag. We interviewed Brianna Davis on our radio show, Those to Watch Radio  . Her interview was awesome due to the fact that we got to see her personality, which is very official and assuring. Not only that, her music, is sick!!! For real. I’m going to stop writing about it now and post the video you see below so you can check it out for yourself.
