Whats Poppington: Senegalese Twist Embrace Black Hair Culture

PrettynPoppingtonBraids

Contrary to what’s becoming popular belief braids and/or cornrows is and will always be African culture. So, do not excuse the cultural appropriation when it comes to braids, cornrows or anything else that gets culturally smudged by white America. I’m not gonna sugar coat anything due to my need to call a duck a duck and not calling a duck a bird that quacks.

Any who, If anyone knows me they will tell you that I’m a braid girl. I LOVE braids. I get my hair braided at least three times through out the year. I choose Senegalese twist as the best braiding style simply because it’s my favorite style and I want you all to adopt it as your favorite too. I know that’s a little manipulative, but so what they’re beautiful, well kept, protective styling for natural hair and you should just take my advice. I would never lead you wrong. I have a few suggestions for you beauties if your deciding to take my advice and make your next braiding style Senegalese twist.

  1. Select a color that compliments your skin tone. You could go online to ikickshins.net and select colors for you extension install. If they don’t have what you need in the store shopping online works for braiding hair just like it works for buying bundles.
  2. Go to a professional. If you don’t know someone that braids well, and will braid to protect your hair opposed to braiding so tight until your eyes kisses your ears go to someone that will preserve your edges and help promote hair growth.
  3. It’s okay to wash your braids. Pull your braids up in a high loose pony tail or bun, and have your friend, sister, husband, mom or brother wash them for you, or figure out how to do it yourself. Focus on your scalp and use a CoWash product like As I Am Coconut CoWash Cleansing Conditioner. By using a CoWash you will cleanse your natural hair and scalp without drying out your tresses.
  4. Enjoy your Senegalese Twist. Where them with pride knowing that your braids isn’t just a hairstyle to wear for fashion. Braids are apart of African culture and beautiful heritage.

Whats Poppington: Black Girl Magic

PrettynPoppington-BlackGirlMagic

Have you ever started your day out at work with tons of questions in regards to your hair. For example, OMG! How did your hair get so long, or wow it looks so natural, how did you do that and my all time favorite, your hair is so curly and short, I didn’t know you could get it that straight with so much length.

If you know anything about black girl magic then all of these comments and questions relate to you. Black hair is a blog in itself. There are tons of topics to discuss when it comes to black hair, but to be particular I want to talk about the natural movement vs creamy crack (a relaxer) .

I was natural for years, so long that I cant remember the year I went natural. About three months ago I cut my hair short and ran back to the relaxer.

collage-2016-07-24

Both styles are natural I have a keratin treatment in one picture and a natural wash and go in the other

I made the decision to go back to a relaxer because as a new mom I could not keep up my natural hair. I LOVED it I honestly did, but keeping it healthy takes a lot of time and dedication. Lotioning, oiling, twisting and braiding every night for an hour was not working. And, If I had to wash my hair that day, well lets just add an extra hour to my hair care mayhem. So, tie all that in with having a new baby and see what you come out with. For me it didn’t work and I opt for a cute relaxed tapered cut.

collage-2016-07-24 (1)

These are before and afters. Naturally curly hair and then relaxed and cut hair.

Every now and then I hit my co-workers with a little black girl magic. It’s fun and I love different looks. Just because I where a weave from time to time or relaxed hair does not mean that I don’t love my color or my natural mane. If you ask a few of the “woke” bothers and sisters that question, get ready to have a seat and listen to the how, what and whys of how black woman should not relax or weave their hair. F.Y.I just because your awake now (as am I) that doesn’t mean you can preach to anyone about how they decide to where their hair. Natural, weaved, or relaxed it’s all beautiful, just maintain healthy hair and choose for yourself your needs to suit your purpose.

collage-2016-07-24 (2)

The long hair is a weave and the other is braided extensions.

In every picture I look different, hair will do that for you, and I enjoyed every look. So, there you have it folks, that’s why it’s called black girl magic.

What’s Poppington: Nude Lingerie For Women of Color

2845339_orig-PrettynPoppington

I remember speaking with a friend at work about this line of nude lingerie for black woman, and while having that conversation I thought to myself my prayers have been answered. All to often when getting dressed for what ever occasion a plain black bra and pantie set just doesn’t fit the bill and when you go shopping you’ll most definitely find nude underwear, just not your shade of nude.

nubian-skin-PrettynPoppington

Well girls, fret no more. Nubian Skin has answered our prayers and they have an array of nude skin tones to select from, as well as they should, being that our beautiful black hue comes in many shades.

Nubian Skin founder, Ade Hassan, decided it was time for ‘a different kind of nude’.

Inspired by trail blazing women, Eunice W. Johnson and super model Iman, who created Fashion Fair and Iman cosmetics, Ade took the leap and created Nubian Skin.  It’s been an uphill battle, but every revolution starts somewhere.

Nubian Skin launched with a carefully edited collection of lingerie and hosiery to provide the essential underwear needs of women of colour.  Headquartered in London, Nubian Skin delivers worldwide and looks forward to growing the company’s offering and expanding its reach.

Whats Poppington: “Dem Thick Up Gal” and Monif C Swimwear

MonifC-PrettynPoppington3

Summer is here, and as a Charleston SC native, I can assure you that it isn’t going to get any cooler anytime soon. For the fuller figured women or “dem thick up gal” this means less clothes and more skin. So, what do you do, or I should say what should “dem thick up gal” do?

MonifC-PrettynPoppington2

Swimwear for full figured women aren’t the most attractive selections seen in your local or big box retailers. I feel that all women are beautiful no matter what size, but lets be honest, retailers do not cater to fashion, and style when making plus size clothing. So again, what do you do? You go somewhere that offers what you want and need. These few words can solve all of your swimwear shopping dilemmas. shop online at Monif C.

MonifC-PrettynPoppington1

While surfing the web I ran across this online boutique and I was happily impressed. Monif C offers designer clothing for all occasions along with designer swimwear. If you fall in the plus size, full figure, or thick up category you need to shop Monif C. The clothing is sexy, sophisticated and fashionable. For a higher end designer boutique the pieces are moderately priced yet affordable for that chic diva that doesn’t mind spending  some coins on boutique prices. Take my word for it, every cent will be well worth your purchase.

Who’s Poppington: Amber Rose Stole The Spotlight at The VMA’s 2014

amber-rose-vma-red-carpet9

All I have to say is “she is a baddie”. I love Amber, Amber Rose that is. She is confident, super curvy, she embraces it with no apologies with style, sex appeal, poise, personality and beauty. Amber stole the spotlight on the red carpet of the 2014 VMA’s. Wearing a Laurel DeWitt chain dress Mrs. Rose posted “Not one single f-ck was given” on a video of her walking the red carpet yesterday. If my body looked like that after having a baby I would rock the hell out of that dress too.

If you don’t have anything nice to say, your simply a hater. That’s how I feel and that’s all that matters on PrettynPoppington. Smooches

Whats Poppington: Kelis For The Evening Standard

kelis-for-the-evening-standard-magazine-prettynpoppington

Kelis, 34, is the Brit Award-winning singer behind such hits as ‘Milkshake’ and ‘Trick Me’. She grew up in Harlem where her mother, a catering chef, fostered her passion for food. Since training as a professional chef in 2006, Kelis has developed a cookery and lifestyle TV show, a cookbook and even her own food truck
In 2003 it was her ‘milkshake’ but these days, it’s Kelis’ béarnaise bringing the boys to the yard. The R’n’B singer retrained as a saucier (yes, it’s a profession) in 2006 at America’s prestigious Le Cordon Bleu school, and has unleashed her culinary expertise on Saucy & Sweet, a food show on the Cooking Channel, as well as a new album, Food.
‘They’re both creative outlets but music is more analytical than cooking,’ she says. ‘Writing songs is very introspective and you have to think about who you are when doing it. A song lasts for ever; cooking is all about the present. Food is instant gratification.’
Her eponymous food truck made its debut at the SWSX festival in Austin this year. Kelis served up jerk ribs and shredded beef with wild cherry sauce sliders to promote her album. Food takes the idea that particular dishes conjure certain memories or feelings. ‘Cobbler’ is all sunny and sweet like the pudding, while ‘Biscuits ’n’ Gravy’ is rich and comforting.
‘I learned early on to respect food,’ she says. ‘My mum would make me Puerto Rican and Chinese dishes so I grew up with exotic tastes. I try to do the same with my son.’ Kelis had Knight, four, with the rapper Nas before they divorced in 2010.
Kelis went to a private school, encouraged by her father, a university professor. ‘When I was seven I used to complain about the school lunch,’ she recalls. ‘My mum said, “If you don’t like something, you change it.” So I made a petition and all the kids signed it. I got in big trouble with the principal but Mum totally backed me up.’
In London, Kelis loves steaks at Hawksmoor on Commercial Road and fine dining at Shoreditch’s Les Trois Garçons. ‘I’m definitely a carnivore,’ she says, but she describes her own cooking style as ‘harvesty’. ‘I like the juxtaposition of different flavours you wouldn’t normally put together.’ So what would she cook to impress us? ‘It would have to be my lasagne. I use chorizo and minced meat seasoned with onions, pepper and garlic and mixed with fresh tomatoes. Then I layer it with plaintain instead of lasagne sheets and before baking pour a heavy cream, egg and smoked cheese mixture over it. On the side I’d serve sweetcorn with a corn béchamel. Making it is kind of a process.’
Next up she’d like a lifestyle brand, something like Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop: ‘I’d like to expand [on the idea] and make it a bit younger and more quirky and fun.’ LJ
Kelis’ single ‘Friday Fish Fry’ is out on 14 July ~Evening Standard Magazine~

Whats Poppington: Nicki’s Hot Instagram

PrettynPoppington-Nicki-Minaj-in-Dolce-Gabbana

I must say, Nicki Minaj looks absolutely amazing. This is my favorite look thus far. Nicki has been making it do what it do with her new look for a while. I think she began her transformation after her ever so eccentric hair stylist, Terrence Davidson, resigned. She couldn’t get Marg Simpson wigs anymore so she opt to transform into the unsurprisingly stunning beauty always dressed in nothing but the best.

terrence-davidson-speaks-out-splits-from-nicki-minaj-the-jasmine-brand

Dressed in a Dolce and Gabbana top and matching skirt Nicki accessorizes with black and chained accented Versace sandals. She is snatched to perfection, and I love it.

Keep it Pretty: Get The New Brow Like Amber Rose or Jenifer aka Ms. Keep it Pretty

Premiere Of Universal Pictures' "Fast & Furious 6" - Arrivals

Amber Rose with a perfect angled/highlighted brow

Have you all seen the “new” brow shape that’s being worn by people now a days. These brows have a triangle shape and they are very attractive if done the right way, or you could look like a hot ass  mess if they aren’t done the right way. I for one like this new brow and have been wearing them for a while. I have took the liberty of doing another makeup tutorial, my second one, to show you fashionable beauties how to achieve and angled highlighted brow, the proper way.

PLEASE, I beg you, do not do this…if you like what I post and see some truth to my vision on beauty, fashion and style, the picture right above this paragraph is not cute, i’s  all wrong. Now, with that being said, if you like it, I don’t love it, but I will still respect you for doing it anyway, that means you have your own mind and you could care less what I think. Just keep in mind that its dead ass wrong. Any who, without further adieu, here is my new beauty tutorial to show you how to achieve an angled brow the right way.

Keep it Pretty: Dark Skin and Pink Lips

IMG_20140406_135020I went out this weekend to an all white party, Charleston Wears White III, very sophisticated event. I wore an all white peplum dress by Guess. It was the Scuba and Mesh Mix Peplum Dress in True White. I accessorized with gold hoop earrings with long gold tassels that accented the earrings. My shoes were also white and they came from Guess as well.  I was prepared for my outfit , but I had absolutely no idea how I was going to do my makeup. Below are pictures and my first tutorial of my look.

IMG_20140405_104756

First I started off playing with colors. I decided to do a pink lip because I love pink lips against my dark brown skin. All of these colors would have worked well because they’re in the cool color family opposed to the warmer color pinks. To make that statement simple, that means all the pinks that I selected complements my skin because they are in the blue family, not colors close to fire cracker red. Needless to say I was indecisive and I chose a totally different color then the swatches above.

IMG_20140407_115423

I chose this color combo, Lorac frosted pink and Liquid Lip color by Mary Kay

After selecting my lip color I was more than satisfied with it . I paired it with a very soft smokey cat eye and a smile.

IMG_20140406_133921

After everything was said and done I went out had a blast, (two party’s in one night) came home took the picture above and made my first makeup tutorial, With my cellie…at 2:30 am. Most people would go to bed. I’m a weirdo so I did a makeup tutorial instead. Enjoy 😉

Keep it Pretty: Makeup, I Love Makeup…

step0005

So I was doing my makeup this morning at my job and when I got finished I said to myself, “self your face is beat to perfection, she looked back at me in the mirror and said, “girl did you forget, this is what you do.” I thought to myself, “oh yea, I am a makeup artist, and this is what I do for a living.” I LOVE DOING MAKEUP and soon you all will get to see me shopping, beating faces to perfection and showing you all how to create quick pulled together and glamorous looks.

My last three hours at work was spent doing an eyelash extension touch-up for and hour starting promptly at 2:30 finishing at 3:30. After cleaning my lash room I went to my station and started taking selfies…gotta love those selfies right, what a great way to past time. This is what I came up with.

IMG1116 You guys can obviously tell that I’m bored (out my mind). It dawned on me that I didn’t have on any lips. So, I went to my purse and whipped out one of the most poppington lip colors “Patent Leather Red” from the KIP Lip collection of Keep it Pretty and Look what it did.

step0002

Me, Jenifer Vanderhorst aka Ms. Keep it Pretty

My camera phone distorts color really bad, but I will put reputation on the line and vouch that these lip colors are Highly pigmented. Needless to say the last two hours of work was super fun. I played in makeup and took pictures of it all 🙂
